Buchanan Tree Friends will Celebrate Arbor Day with School and Community Events
Buchanan, MI – Buchanan Tree Friends (BTF) will celebrate Arbor Day by relaunching the Junior Tree Friends group at Buchanan Middle School on Thursday, April 23, and hosting a community tree-planting event on Sunday, April 26.
Arbor Day is a yearly holiday dedicated to planting, nurturing, and celebrating trees to promote environmental stewardship. Each year, the BTF gathers fifth graders at Buchanan Middle School to speak to them about the importance of planting and celebrating trees. They also distribute tree saplings for the students to plant at home. This year, all of the saplings are Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), donated entirely by Sawyer Garden Center. 150 saplings, with planting and care instructions, will be given to each fifth grader, and 50 saplings will be planted at Buchanan’s School Farm to help build the Maple Grove for the school’s annual Maple Syrup Project, which allows all Buchanan fourth graders to participate in the tapping and cooking of local maple syrup. The Buchanan American Legion Honor Guard will be in attendance, as well as representatives from the City of Buchanan, to officially read the official Arbor Day proclamation as made by the Arbor Day Foundation. The BTF is also hosting its annual spring tree planting on Sunday, April 26, from 1 - 3 pm beginning at the Veterans’ Memorial Park on the corner of Redbud Trail and Front Street in Buchanan. More than 30 trees will be planted in multiple locations, including the new Dewey St. walkway, Veterans’ Memorial Park, the Duck Pond area, along the outside of the dog park, McCarty’s Well Drilling, and Buchanan City Hall. Volunteers are needed! The group encourages anyone interested (all ages and abilities) to sign up to volunteer online at cityofbuchanan.com/bc-btf or the group’s Facebook page at facebook.com/BuchananTreeFriends/.
Buchanan's recognition as a Tree City USA for more than 30 years reflects the community's commitment to trees, encouraging residents to feel proud and to continue protecting the environment. The BTF mission is to grow a thriving environment for trees in Buchanan through advocacy, conservation, and education.
