Keep Our Community Safe and Accessible!
Keep Our Community Safe and Accessible! As winter weather continues, the City reminds all property owners, tenants, of their responsibility to keep public sidewalks adjacent to their property clear and safe. As a reminder of our city ordinance: Sec. 86-67. - Duty to keep sidewalk clear of obstruction.
(1)
The owner or occupant of any lands and premises butting upon any public sidewalk shall keep the same free of all sand, rubbish, dirt and litter, and shall remove promptly all snow which shall fall thereon and all ice which shall form thereon.
(2)
If the occupant(s) and/or the owner(s) fail to remove all sand, rubbish, dirt, litter, ice or snow from said sidewalks within 24 hours of being notified by the city of such violation, the failure to remove may result in any offending accumulation to be removed by the city at the expense of the occupant(s) and/or owner(s).
· Clear Paths: Sidewalks should be cleared to their full width (or a minimum of 36–48 inches) to ensure accessibility for strollers, mail carriers, and mobility devices.
· Corner Lots: If you live on a corner, please clear the curb ramps and crosswalk access points to keep intersections safe for everyone.
· Treatment: If ice cannot be fully removed, please apply sand, salt, or deicer to prevent slips and falls.
· Be a Good Neighbor: Check on elderly neighbors or those with disabilities who may need an extra hand with their shoveling.
