Chief’s Corner
November/December 2025 Edition
Tis’ the season for traveling to see loved ones, the selfless purchase of gifts to spread holiday cheer, and a time to give thanks for all blessings received. Unfortunately, it is also the time when citizens, if not careful, can become victims of crime. Here are a few tips from the National Neighborhood Watch to help you have a safe and fun-filled holiday season.
Leaving for the Holidays
· Ask a trusted friend, neighbor or family member to watch your home.
o If you are a City of Buchanan resident you can fill out a Property Watch Form during business hours (Monday – Friday, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm) at the Buchanan Police Department or complete the online version HERE. Officers will check your property during the timeframe listed on your form.
· Use timers that vary for the activation of lights, televisions and radios while you are away.
· Make arrangements for mail and package deliveries.
· Notify family members or friends of the timeframe when you are expected to arrive.
While Shopping
· Practice “situational awareness.” This means always be aware of your surroundings, such as where you park, the people and vehicles that you see in the parking lot or are behind you at the checkout register, and the time of day that you plan to shop.
· Avoid carrying a large amount of cash when making purchases as much as possible.
· Make sure to lock your packages in the truck or rear area of your car that limits visibility from the outside. If the rear area of your vehicle is visible, cover packages with dark blankets.
· Plan out your shopping trips. Take major purchases home before shopping for less expensive ones.
At Home
· Lock your vehicle and take all valuables inside your home. Regardless, if it is parked in the driveway or on the roadway in front of your home.
· Ensure that dark areas and entrances have outdoor lights that are turned on after dark or are activated by a motion sensor.
· If possible, install door ring/security cameras at all entrances and blind spots of the house.
· Make arrangements for packages being delivered (i.e., delivered to your work, networking with a neighbor or family member to pick them up, or leave specific drop off instructions with the delivery company).
· Be aware of scams, whether it be in person, over the phone, or on the internet, that criminals commit to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays.
· Investigate charities before donating.
