SUMMARY

The City of Buchanan is accepting applications for the position of Bookkeeper. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter with a resume to: Buchanan City Hall, ATTN: City Treasurer, Stephanie Powers, 302 N. Under the general direction of the City Treasurer, the Bookkeeper assists in maintaining accounting records, processes payroll, administers accounts payable and accounts receivable, assists with tax distribution and collection, and assists in the collecting and accounting of monies received by the city. Detailed responsibilities below.

This position requires at least two years of financial accounting experience.

Experience in the field of municipal accounting is preferred, but not required. Training specific to municipal finance will be provided by employer (some travel may be necessary to attend occasional training events, with all travel expenses reimbursed by employer).

An associate degree (or higher) in finance or accounting, or its equivalent, is preferred, but not required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist in maintaining city computerized accounting records.
    • Run Trial Balances and post general ledger journal entries.
    • Reconcile bank statements and prepare reports of bank balances.
    • Maintain records of receipts and expenditures for various city budget accounts and prepare related reports for auditors.
    • Assist in coordinating the computerized accounting functions.
    • Run monthly reports for commission and department heads.

2. Process city payrolls.
    • Assemble time records for regular and special payrolls
    • Process payrolls for regular, temporary and part-time employees and assign labor costs to proper accounts.
    • Maintain year-to-date records. Prepare annual employee earnings reports for income tax purposes and annual benefits statements for employees.
    • Disburse payroll withholdings and post payroll costs to proper accounts and cost centers.
