City Manager Heather Grace
The City Manager is the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) appointed by the City Commission to manage the affairs of the City. The City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the City, provides overall direction to and is responsible for the management, staffing, administration, and operation of all City Departments. It is the duty of the City Manager to provide reports to the Commission regarding ongoing activities within the City. The City Manager also evaluates services and makes recommendations for the improvement of operations, in addition to duties associated with the creation, implementation, and management of the City budget.
Ms. Grace was born and raised in Northern Michigan, where she met and married her high-school sweetheart, T.J. Grace. Together they have two children—a nine-year-old son named Lowan, and a two-year-old daughter named Faith. As a family, the Grace’s absolutely love Buchanan, and are so glad to have moved to such a fantastic part of the State!
Heather Grace graduated with honors from Saginaw Valley State University with a B.A. in History and Political Science, having won the coveted “History Student of the Year” designation. Ms. Grace went on to graduate with honors from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing with a J.D. in Litigation, having won awards at two separate National Moot Court Competitions. Also during her studies at Cooley, Ms. Grace worked in two different positions with the Michigan House of Representatives, in addition to two different positions within the Michigan Court of Appeals—including a clerkship position with then Court of Appeals Judge Bill Schuette.
After serving for a time as a practicing attorney, working both in private practice and for the public sector, Ms. Grace decided to focus her skills on serving her community in a more broad-based manner—through public service as a municipal executive and part-time adjunct professor for the Kirtland Community College Police Academy. After 4 ½ years of service as the City Manager for West Branch, Michigan, Ms. Grace relocated to Buchanan, Michigan to serve as Buchanan’s City Manager. She is thankful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Buchanan, and is excited for tremendous things to come!
