Water Operations The Water system consists of the following personnel: Superintendent (1) Forman (1) Operator (2) Wells: The City of Buchanan water system consists of
three wells located in the Department of Public Works area. The wells deliver an
average of 600,000 gallons per day, with increases related to temperatures of
the day.
Statistics: Well No. 1 produces 1000 gallons per minute Well No. 3 produces 800 gallons per minute Well No. 4A produces 700 gallons per minute Chlorine used 2-4 pounds per day (average) Fluoride used 5 pounds per day (average) Distribution: The distribution system consists of 30 miles of water mains ranging in size from three inch to twelve inch, two elevated towers totaling 750,000 gallons, 252 hydrants, and over 420 valves. Water mains and service leads are maintained by this department. Hydrant Flushing: Hydrants are flushed twice per year in the months of April and October. Hydrants flushing is performed to remove the accumulation of iron buildup in the system. Well Head Protection: The city has an ongoing Well Head Protection Program which was approved by the MDEQ. The program performs inspection for possible contamination sites, increases public awareness and education of water contamination, explores possible new well sites, and performs plugging of abandon wells. How to Check For Leaks Leaks unchecked can drip hundreds of gallons of water wastefully down the drain. A little detective work can catch these leaks easily. Check your toilets, faucets, outside taps and sprinkler systems. Put 15 drops of food coloring in the tank of the toilet and do not flush the toilet. After one (1) hour, check the bowl and if the colored water leaked through to the bowl, there is a leak in the toilet. Write down the numbers on your meter at night before you go to bed. Do not use any water. In the morning, check the meter again. If the numbers have advanced without using any water, there is a leak in the system and a plumber should be called. Water & Sewer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Is my meter broke?: A meter will slow down and stop if it is not working. Meters do not speed up. How do I read the meter? The meter is either numbers or dials and the meter is read from left to right. How could I have used so much water? If a water reading is an actual read, the water used at your house flowed through your meter. Check for leaks! Will you really shut my water off? Yes. As a courtesy to our customers, we send out a pink door card reminding them that a payment is due within three working days to avoid disconnection.
If you shut my water off, do I owe any other charges? Yes, we require full payment of the past due balance and $100 deposit and $60 turn-off/turn-on charge. Do I ever get my deposit back? Yes, you must contact the water department after one year of your disconnect and if your account has remained current (no penalties or door cards issued) for one year, we will return your deposit. Do you offer any payment/extension agreements? Yes, twice a year we will accept an extension agreement, per household. The terms are that you complete an extension form at City Hall, pay half (1/2) of the balance due at this time and agree to pay the remaining balance due in two (2) weeks. There is an additional $10 extension fee for this service. In the event payment is not made according to the extension agreement, no additional extensions will be granted in any year. If I have a pool, can I get a credit for filling up my pool in the spring? Yes, you are eligible to receive a credit for the sewer portion only from the recorded usage on your meter prior to and after the pool fill is complete. You must call our office prior to beginning the pool fill process and give us the starting meter read number. After you have completed filling your pool, call us back with the meter read number. We will credit your next water billing according to the usage calculated from the meter readings. ONLY ONE POOL FILL ADJUSTMENT ALLOWED PER YEAR. When will I get my sprinkler meter billing? We mail out sprinkler meter billings annually every September.
