The Buchanan Police Department is opened 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day including all Holidays. The department consists of 1 Chief, 2 Sergeants, 6 Patrol Officers, and 1 Civilian Administrative Secretary. The department is supplemented by up to 20 Reserves Police Officers and a Chaplain. The department works for the Community of Buchanan. Sgt. Harvey Burnett is the DARE officer for the Buchanan Police Department and the Buchanan School System. Sergeant JT Adkerson is the School Liaison for the Buchanan Police Department and works with the High School Law class every year. Students from that class have the opportunity to ride with the police officers for an 8 hour shift. (Ride Along Program) The department holds a Citizen Police Academy twice a year, once in the Spring and again in the Fall. Traffic Safety, Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Narcotics, Juvenile Trouble, Domestic Violence, and Crime Prevention are just a few of the topics covered in this 8 week class. The Class meets 1 night a week for 8 weeks, 2-3 hours at a time. In addition to the police department’s regular duties, we try to participate
(and organize a few) in all the communities special functions.
