Current City News BUCHANAN WATER CUSTOMERS
On Monday, August 16th, the City will begin installing “End Points” on every outside meter in the City and Township that is receiving our municipal water & sewer services. The City is contracting with a company called “City Services” to install the end points. This contractor will be driving a black Toyota Tacoma Truck and will have the City of Buchanan’s logo on the side. He will be wearing a bright yellow vest and will have identification with the City’s logo on it. A normal installation takes 10 minutes and the contractor does not need to enter the home or business. It is expected that this project will take two weeks to complete. If a resident has concerns, please call City Hall immediately and we can verify the contractor’s identity. RECYCLING SCHEDULE TO CHANGE Effective April 29th, Reliable Disposal will pickup recycling every fourth Thursday. SEWER AND WATER IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS The City of Buchanan received funds from the MDEQ for both Sewer and Water Improvements to be made during the years 2009 and 2010. The 2009 projects included lining several sanitary lines in the City, rehabilitating the City's lift station controls and renovating the City Wastewater Treatment Plant. The projects began in Spring of 2009 and are currently underway. The sewer projects are expected to be complete in early 2010. While there were some temporary interruptions in the sewer service, no further interruptions in service are expected. The city plans to kick-off its water improvement projects in March of 2010. The Water improvements, funded by a Drinking Water Revolving Fund Loan through Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) include a new well and transmission, new main to supplement the City's existing system, a new water control facility to manage water treatment and supply operations, a new tower based billing system, a new Third St. water main, water valve replacements and water tower improvements. The total water project cost is estimated to be $2.9 million. The City received forgiveness of 40% of the project costs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, saving the City an estimated $1.1 million. Construction for the improvements is scheduled to begin in April 2010. While steps will be taken to limit service interruptions, it is possible that, at times, water service may be intermittent. Residents and businesses will be notified a minimum of 48 hours in advance of any possible service interruptions. Construction will be completed near November, 2010. Questions regarding the upcoming improvements can be directed to Abonmarche, Kenton C. McAndrew, Group Director, 269-927-2295, x 122. If you see a property that concerns you due to abandonment or weed overgrowth, please contact the City of Buchanan's Code Enforcement Team and alert them to the situation. They can be reached at 695-0006. The occupant(s) of every property within the city, and/or the owner(s) of the property, shall remove any accumulation of ice or snow from the public sidewalks adjoining such property within 24 hours of the accumulation or placement of snow or ice on said sidewalks at a minimum of the width of the sidewalk or 36 inches, whichever is less. |
